Natural Eye Makeup for Prom

2016.04.12

We have told you all about how to create a smokey eye and the best makeup for your eye color — but now I am going to share some Faviana prom secrets on how to get the best natural eye makeup. Sure, getting extra glammed up for your special occasion seems special but I am here to show you how you can achieve a glamorous look, while keeping it simple and natural and letting your own beauty shine through.

I am not suggesting just throwing on a little mascara and calling it a day; I am saying there are ways to keep your makeup beautifully simple while still looking formal. This is especially useful for those who do not wear a ton of makeup to begin with but still want to look sophisticated, youthful and polished. Keep reading to achieve the perfect natural eye prom makeup.

Tip 1: Face First

This natural eye look will only work if it is done properly. Your number one asset in a natural makeup look is the healthy and glow of your skin.  Think of prepping your skin and face as perfecting a canvas for your eyes to pop in the most natural way. Before you even think about applying eye shadow, make sure your face is blended and ready to go. Follow these skin perfecting steps:

  • Moisturizer:  make sure your face is clean and exfoliated and then apply your daily moisturizer. Wait 15 minutes so that it has time to really set in; which will allow the steps to follow to adhere better to your skin. Apply all over your face.
  • Primer:  this is key to event worthy makeup. Primer fills in all your pores and imperfections so that your foundation really glides over and stays on longer. Bare Minerals makes amazing primer in the original, lightweight clear gel, tinted shades to match your skin tone, oil reducing or brightening formulas, and even redness reducing products. Apply all over your face.
  • Concealer:  choose a concealer that is 1-2 shades lighter than your skin shade. Conservatively dab your concealer under your eye and anywhere you have a blemish. Use a concealer brush to pat your skin and delicately blend.
  • Foundation:  since you will already have 3 layers of product on your skin by this point, you will need less foundation that you normally use. Whether you use a loose power or liquid foundation, use about half as much as you normally would and blend into your neck.
  • Blush:  choose a light pink or peach shade and apply a small splash onto the apples of your cheeks.
  • Setting Powder:  use a translucent pressed powder to swipe all over your face. This will set your makeup and reduct oil and shine.
  • Highlight & Bronzer:  highlight those cheekbones and blend that bronzer all the way down to your neck. Read our beginners guide to strobing for more details on how to achieve that natural glow.

Now we can move onto eyes!

Tip 2: Lighten Up the Shadow

The calling card of a natural look really relies on natural eye makeup. A natural look calls for neutral and light colors. Here is how to get the perfect shadow combo:

Step 1: Apply a natural pale, flesh, or tan color all over your lid up to your brow bone.

Step 2: (sparkle optional) If you want to add a little sparkle, lightly apply a neutral sparkle color just to your lids.

Step 3: Contrast and add depth to your eye by applying a shade of shadow 2-3 times darker than your base shadow in shades like taupe, clay, or smoke grey. Apply into the crease of your eye and blend outwards. It should fade out before it meets the corner of your eye.

Step 4: (sparkle optional) Lightly apply a bit of a darker sparkle color over the contrasting crease color to add a little pop.

Step 5: Take the lightest eye shadow color (pale pink or white) and apply just a dash from corner of your eye outward and under your brow. This will highlight your features and even add a little glow. Also add a white shade to your brow bone (right under your eyebrow hair).

Tip 3: A Little Liner Goes a Long Way

Use a liquid liner pen and sweep above your lash line. Keep your eye liner even on both eyes by keeping your hand and the liner parallel to the floor! Also make sure to not leave a space between the line you apply and your lash line!

You can stop there or continue and use a brown or soft black eyeliner pencil (not a liquid liner pen like you used for the upper lash line) on your bottom waterline for a softer but defined look. For an extra highlight, I recommend taking the same highlight eye shadow color and apply it directly underneath your bottom liner too. Remember, a little goes a long way!

Tip 4: No Need to Lash Out on Your Lashes

If you already have long eyelashes, ditch the fake ones. If you are going for the natural look, you will not achieve that by applying fake lashes. Simply apply a few coats of mascara on your top and bottom lashes to finish your eye look.

If you think your eyelashes are on the shorter side but still want to have an overall natural eye makeup look, it is achievable. There are various types of fake eyelashes to pick from. Just go for the most natural looking ones and use those. Stay away from the full, heavy ones- that is not what you want if you are reading this article. Apply a little mascara on your bottom lashes and there you have it, your complete natural eye makeup.

All that is left is to apply a light neutral or pink lipstick paired with a sheer gloss and you are good to go. Natural eye makeup is an awesome way to bring out your natural beauty and also lets your prom dress do all the talking!
