5 Tips For Dyeing Your Hair

2018.10.29

It’s a new season, which calls for a new you. This is the perfect season to experiment with different styles, so why not a different hair color? We are here to give you the best tips for dyeing your hair!

Know Your Natural Hair

This includes both your natural hair color and texture. Your natural hair color is what first determines where to start when you’re choosing a desired shade and formula. Those with lighter and warmer hair tones can take on more colors, compared to cooler and darker hues. Always check with a hairstylist to see which colors will work for you. Additionally, hair texture matters just as much as color when dyeing your hair. Curly or frizzy hair sucks up color more, while fine to straight hair does not. This plays a major role when choosing a hair dye color.

Start With Less Permanent

To ensure it’s a hair color you’ll look good with and be happy with, try playing around with less permanent solutions. This includes temporary hair dyes, hair chalk, extensions, and even wigs! You’ll be able to test an array of colors and see what you and others think of it before it’s permanent. This is probably the smartest thing you can do before dyeing your hair and jumping into it. It’s quick, it’s painless, and you’ll certainly determine if the new shade is right for you.

Be Realistic Dyeing Your Hair

Dyeing your hair is a huge commitment, so you want to be both realistic and serious about it. Drastic hair color can’t be achieved overnight, nor can be changed easily. When you first dye your hair, the color may appear ashy, brassy, or just disappointing. That’s why it’s important to know this and start with a subtle shift to obtain the results you desire. It will take patience, experimentation, and possibly multiple sessions.

Always Buy More

This is especially important if you’re dyeing your hair by yourself. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you should always buy 2-3 boxes of hair dye for full coverage. Remember: it’s better to have too much hair dye, than to realize you need more halfway through the process. Buying more than you need will cover every last strand and enhance the shade you’re going for. Plus, there will be extra leftover for touch-ups!

Follow Appropriate After-Care

You just got your hair dyed, but now it’s time to make it last. There are certain protocols and products out there made for dyeing your hair, so use them! We know it’s summer, but this means steering away from the pool for at least 2 weeks. Chlorine strips away the hair cuticle and can alter your hair color. Additionally, you should invest in a color preserving shampoo and conditioner that won’t wash away your hair dye. To fix damaged hair from hydrogen peroxide, it’s not a bad idea to use hair masks and oil serums. Check out our summer hair care guide.
