Awards Season Arrives with a Whoosh, a Rustle, and possibly an “Oops!”

We’re two-thirds of the way through the Golden Globes/Screen Actors Guild/Oscars trifecta and what have we learned? Quite a bit, actually!

Blue is the new black

Whether sequined like Nicole Kidman’s or simple like Jennifer Lawrence’s beautifully layered Dior, blue was a big winner this season. At the SAG Awards, Kidman, Amanda Seyfried, Marion Cotillard, and Lawrence all rocked navy exquisitely, though the jury is still out on whether J-Law ripped her dress on the way up to receive her award, or if Dior merely included a little cut-away. Jessica Chastain’s washed-out blue at the Golden Globes, however, was a bit of a miss. Girl, you’re too pale for that!

However, black remains a basic

Whether studded or sequined, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Anne Hathaway, and the hilarious Jane Lynch all looked stunning in basic black at the SAGS, while Debra Messing, Rachel Weiss, and Nicole Kidman kept it basic at the Golden Globes. Who will wear black at the Oscars?

Metallics are never a miss

Michelle Dockery and Julianne Hough both rocked gold metallic at the Golden Globes, and Jennifer Garner repeated the trend at the SAGs. Helen Hunt and Naomi Watts both opted for beautiful silver sequins at the SAG Awards. Note to Emily Watts—you’re gorgeous, but when you’re wearing sequins, you need to run a brush through that mop and slap on a little lipstick.

We’re still seeing red

Zooey Deschanel, Marion Cotillard, and Clair Danes all opted for crimson at the Golden Globes (Claire, you should’ve continued this trend at the SAGS, instead of opting for that baggy black and white number). Naomi Watts and Taylor Swift—complete with minor wardrobe malfunction—kept with the red theme, but went a little darker with oxblood gowns for the occasion.

Winter white is also all right

Let’s face it, Sofia Vergara could look stunning in a burlap sack, but her white DKNY at the SAGs had a puzzling bit of cleavage blocking attached. Kerry Washington wore it better. Poor Michelle Dockery was forced to wear her second-choice, black, to the Golden Globes after a waiter spilled wine down her white gown. But the real loser of the trend was the normally stunning Julianne Moore in an ultra-low-cut white gown with black detailing. Giving new meaning to the “SAG” awards, honey, you’ve got to boost your assets if you’re going to show that much cleavage.

Can’t wait to see what everyone’s wearing to the Academy Awards on February 24!
